016 - Buy 1 Get 1 Free

Video 016: This video clip makes me laugh. Actually a lot of them do. A HISO lady is telling off her servant for buying products on promotion. She says she doesn't want people to think that she is poor.

This scene is so typical of the HISO. Status is so important to them that they will pay over the market price. This probably explains why some shopkeepers insist on charging foreign tourists such high prices. They probably think they are doing them a favour! Anyway, there are some good phrases in this video clip that I want to highlight for you.

ซื้อ 1 แถม 1 - This is actually a useful one for when you go shopping. Also a good reason that you should learn how to read Thai. It says: "buy one and get one free!".

ว้าย - Notice the lady says "wai" several times. It is often used by women in moments of surprise/shock.

ตายแล้ว - Hopefully you can spot this phrase from a previous video clip. For her itis the end of the world so she says "dtai laew".

กี่ครั้งกี่หนแล้ว - This is a nice little phrase that translates as "many times, many occasions". To say "กี่ครั้ง" by itself means "how many times?"

จน - In these soap operas, you will often hear them talking about the "jon" people - otherwise known as the poor.

แย่จริงๆ - Oneof my favourite (over the top) phrases that I must admit to using a few times is this one that translates as "that's really bad".
