013 - Your Mother is Mia Noi! |

Video 013: This one is an argument between two kids. I wanted to show you this video clip because it also has some interesting cultural points. The young boy is called Wasin. The older one is Un. The older one comes in and changes the channel on the tv. The younger boy asks if he can finish watching first. The older one refuses. He then kicks Wasin back into his chair. Wasin gets up and says that hurts. The old one then reminds Wasin that he shouldn't call him "pee un" but rather "khun un". This is because Wasin is the son of the "mia noi" or "mistress". Wasin of course then hits the older boy who calls for his mother to help. She comes in to see what all the fuss is about. Un says that Wasin hit him. วศิน: ขอดูให้จบก่อน
อ้น: ไม่ให้ฉันจะดูเรื่องอื่นเรื่องนี้ฉันดูแล้ว
วศิน: พี่อ้นดูแล้วแต่ศินยังไม่ได้ดู

แม่: ตายแล้วหนูอ้นเป็นอะไรคะใครทำน้องอ้นคะเนี่ย

แม่: แกกล้าต่อยน้องอ้นเหรอไอ้ศินเรื่องใหญ่แน่อีลูกแม่ไม่สั่งสอน
There are a few words and phrases that I want to highlight today for you.
พี่อ้น - Un is older than Wasin so he calls him Pee. This can translate as older brother or sister though that person doesn't really have to be your relation. It is just showing affection/respect.
คุณแม - Children don't usually refer to their mother as Mae. They make it more polite by saying Khun Mae. The same goes for professional people like doctors and teachers. I would call the doctor Khun Mor. The next door neighbour calls me Khun Khru (actually I think she is sucking up to me because she wants her son to go to my school).
คุณอ้น - The older sibling (actually half brother because they have different mothers) tells Wasin that he should show respect and call him Khun Un. This is very HISO. The servants probably call him Khun Un, or will when he is a little older.
ไอ้ - If Khun is the mark of respect, than "I" is the complete opposite. This is for showing contempt to males. So, it is not very nice to put this in the front of someone's name.
เมียน้อย - This is an interesting one and very Thai. It literally translates as lesser wife, or mistress. Unlike other countries, the mistress and her child sleeps in the same house as the rest of the family. Though the main wife often shows her utter contempt. As you can see from the actions of this boy, she has taught her son to show the same contempt.
ช่วยด้วย - I like this phrase. You often hear it in dramas. It means "help me please" and you should shout it if someone is trying to mug you! I think I would burst out laughing if I started shouting that in the streets as sually only the women in the dramas shout this. It is not very manly.
ตายแล้ว - I like this phrase. Word by word it translates as "die already". When I hear people say this, I always reply "ใครตาย?". It always makes them laugh as this is not the real meaning here. I suppose you could translate it as "oh my God" as it is a cry of shock.
เป็นอะไร - This is a usualy phrase that you will hear often. Ben a-rai means "what's the matter".
แก - When Thai people use the personal pronouns they certainly put you in your place. This version of "you" is only used for servants or people of inferior status. The mother uses this here for obvious reasons. While we are on the subject, the mother will use "ter" when talking to another female of equal status and "khun" when talking to her husband.
มัน - This is another personal pronoun. It should really only be used with animals as itmeans "it". Not very nice to say "it hit me".
หนูอ้น and น้องอ้น - The word Noo literally translates as little mouse. It is a word of affection that mothers put before names of their children. You can call an older girl Noo if you like if she is much younger than you. Then Nong is used for someone younger than you. It is the opposite of Pee. Notice how she switches from Noo Un to Nong Un. First he is hurt so she calls him Noo. Then she talks to Wasin and gets angry and says how dare you hit Nong Un. She is trying to make it sound like Wasin is the bigger boy and beat up her son. Really, she should have said "Pee Un" when talking to Wasin.
เรื่องใหญ่ - Thai people often like big stories. This translates as important event.
อี - My final word for today is also a personal pronoun. This one is used to show contempt for a female and is a pair to that former one "I". So you have "ee" and "i".
