011 - Smoking in the Hedge
Video 011: In this video clip, a girl (Or) finds her brother (Hoi) smoking in the bushes. He tells her not to tell on him to their father. She agrees but says that he has to promise not to smoke anymore. He refuses. He then goes on to say that if she does, he will say that Un also smokes. She says it is not true. He says that it is and not only that, he also drinks and takes drugs. He says that if she doesn't believe him, then she should go and ask him.

There are a few phrases I want to highlight for you today.

ทำอะไรน่ะ - what are you doing?

สูบบุหรี่เหรอ - Are you smoking? The last word is เหรอ rich should be pronounced as "reu" but comes out as "ler" which is quite common. I must admit I do that too which is a bit naughty. A bad habit. Watching too may soap operas I think.

นะ - I just want to point out this end particle which is often used. ทำอะไรน่ะ - it is put at the end to make it sound more polite. There is an alternative end particle which can also be used here which isn't so polite. I will tell you about that later. You sometimes hear people saying, "na, na, na, na" which sort of translates as "pretty please". It is very cute but really should only be said by girls. I will try and find you a clip later.

อย่าฟ้อง - don't tell on me

พี่หอย - This is the guy's name - "pee" as I have discussed before, is used for elder brother/sister. Hoi is his nickname. It means shellfish. Notice that he refers to himself as "Pee". If he was talking to one of his friends he wouldn't do that for sure. There is an impolite pronoun which is often used and I will bring that to you later. There is a soap opera on Mondays and Tuesdays called "Sawatdee Khun Khru" which has High School kids and will give you some excellent slang.

สัญญา - a nice word to remember which basically means "promise".

ไม่จริง - In soap operas you will often hear them say "not true" or "mai jing". If they are asking if it is true, then they will say "jing ler bao". I was watching a soap opera set in Isaan this evening on Channel 7 (my favourite at the moment) and one of the characters said "ee ee bor" which I am guessing means the same. I cannot find my Isaan dictionary at the moment. I like the way they say "sabaidee" instead of "sawatdee".

เหล้า - This is any form of alcohol - "gin lao" usually means to drink and get drunk.
ยา - these are drugs of some kind - maybe "yaa baa" which is crazy medicine.

ไม่เชื่อ - Translates literally as "no believe". This is often used and you will hear it often.
