001 - Why is Your mobile Turned Off?
Written by Richard Barrow
Saturday, 07 April 2007
VIDEO 001: This video clip is a telephone conversation between a wife and her husband. She first asks why he had turned off his mobile phone. Then asks if the meeting had finished already. He lies to her. She then says "that's all" and puts the phone down.
Don't worry if you cannot understand it all at this stage. However, I would like you to try and listen for some of these keywords:

โทรมา - toh maa - the secretary says that Mrs. Suliwan rang him.

ฮัลโหล - hah-loh - this is obviously hello - just make sure you say it with a Thai accent.

ทำไม - tam mai - The wife starts by saying "why?". She is asking why he has to turn off his mobile phone.

ทำไมเหรอ - tam mai reu - The husband explains he forgot to turn it on since this morning. Look out for him saying "tam mai" himself towards the end. This is like saying "why do you ask?"

มีอะไรเหรอ - me a-rai reu - then he rephrases it slightly by saying something like "what do you have to say?"

ประชุม - bra-chum - you should hear her clearly saying this. He also says it though he sounds more like saying "ba-choom". This is meeting. She is asking if the meeting has finished.

เมื่อกี้นี้เอง - meua gee nee eng - This is a useful phrase. You might hear it again in a future clip. He replies that the meeting has only just finshed.

แค่นี้ - kae nee - For sure you will be hearing this again. It is a great way to end a telephone conversation. It's a bit like the end of the Walt Disney cartoons when they say "that's all folks!"
